In Class Sampling Remix

When I saw raj's sampling projects I noticed the communist flag's use (I assume) to associate copyright law with totalitarian governments. That inspired me to think that maybe instead it should be associated with capitalism because it's the pursuit of profit that prompts the overuse and overenforcement of copyright law. To express that sentiment (of copyright law exacerbating the contagion of avarice at the expense of our freedoms) I made the following picture-

With the position of the copyright sign and dollar signs replacing certain stars I tried to make the $'s look like a mushroom ring to express the epidemic aspect with copyright law at the center of it.

Wow, that is really creative. I think you hit the nail on the head with this visual argument. It's probably something that some of our fellow American citizens and foreigners alike would find amusing...It definately gives people something to think about. Do we really have the creative freedom that the Constitution gives us rights to?

I agree, definitely something to think about. Very interesting use of the flag and the ideas of communism and capitalism. I wouldn't have thought to make that connection. Good job.

I think that's very true. There is a certain totalitarian element to this whole degeneration, but it's only possible because of the great lengths one can take our legal system. It seems like the idea of freedom is being warped into the "state" controlled model it was meant to guard against. I think your remix is powerful, although I might put your flag and Raj's side by side.

I think that the communist symbols could also be used in a positive statement to reference the free and equal exchange of ideas and creativity that would result in a society which would be free of copyright law and, subseauently, free of connecting creativity with monetary gain (a communist ideal which has never existed, and probably never will). I feel that The Coup (a heavily political band) would really appreciate your symbol. I feel it is an exact image-based replica of the statements their lyrics make.

Hey, kind of a late response but better than never-

I like the somewhat more subtle approach to your work, as at the first, quick glance, I took it to be a normal flag. Looking closer, I noticed the $ signs. It's odd to think copyright could so easily be situated in many different systems, yet that is what modernization has caused: such is the nature of copyright. I'm glad you understood my picture and were "inspired"!
